We do not believe these bills will result in protecting law-abiding businesses and will not get workers paid faster.<\/p>\n<p>Massachusetts already has the most comprehensive wage laws in the country, and the vast majority of Massachusetts employers comply with these laws. S. 1300 and H. 2094 will unnecessarily punish legitimate, law-abiding companies in all industries across the state, and will not result in getting employees paid faster. If a company violates the law, they should be held accountable for their acts. We do not believe the law-abiding companies should be liable for the actions of others.<\/p>\n<p>We appreciated the opportunity over past sessions to work with the Committee as we all attempted to develop a consensus bill. The Wage Theft Working Group convened by the three past Chairs of the Committee allowed representatives from our coalition to work with the proponents of the wage theft bills along with the Committee and their staff. The collegial atmosphere allowed the working group to try to develop a compromise wage theft bill, but ultimately no consensus was reached. We are eager to continue past sessions\u2019 work and look forward to working with this Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Our coalition has consistently supported increased funding for the Attorney General\u2019s Office to enforce Massachusetts\u2019 existing wage theft laws. Wage theft is illegal and enhanced enforcement of current laws will do a lot to combat this practice ensuring that violating companies are held responsible.<\/p>\n<p>Our coalition takes wage theft seriously and recognizes that it is in everyone\u2019s best interest to eradicate it.
