Public transit that stops running before nightlife establishments close. Expensive and limited liquor licenses and cover charges. High costs of living that impact the nightlife economy. And laws that don\u2019t always consider the cultural makeup of the city.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">These are just a few of the challenges to navigate when we think about creating a city that we want to see, one that puts the same amount of energy into nighttime as it does the daytime \u2013one that responds to the unique needs of Boston\u2019s culturally diverse residents.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">On the other hand, Boston has expanded its usage of outdoor and green spaces that foster community growth through activities like outdoor movie nights. With more than 150,000 college students who hang out along the Green Line areas of Allston and Brighton, Boston is seeing a shift in elevating existing spaces that can support its nightlife economy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Showcasing its commitment to retaining talent and celebrating the cultural vibrancy of Greater Boston, the City has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.gov\/news\/corean-reynolds-named-director-nightlife-economy-boston\">appointed its first Director of Nightlife Economy<\/a>, <strong>Corean Reynolds<\/strong>, in February. She is one of only 13 people in the United States in this role. With a work history in urban planning and a vested interest in closing racial wealth gaps, Corean&#8217;s role is focused on, as she worded it, \u201cwhat we are doing when we aren\u2019t at school, home<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> or work, where we get creative, where we heal<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> and where we express ourselves.\u201d <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">Her role is beyond the physical establishments that make Boston a place to live, but rather, how nightlife will impact the quality of life for residents, and how it intersects with public health, transit, and more.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"TextRun SCXW99352405 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW99352405 BCX0\">Earlier this month, the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce and City Awake held an <a href=\"https:\/\/bostonchamber.com\/events\/make-your-voice-heard-reimagining-nightlife-with-corean-reynolds\/\">open discussion<\/a><\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW99352405 BCX0\"> with Corean and our young professional community<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW99352405 BCX0\"> on these topics.<\/span><\/span><\/em><\/p>\n  \r\n            <\/div>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n<\/section>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"650\" height=\"366\" data-src=\"https:\/\/bostonchamber.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/53249284425_6bd435e49c_b-edited-e1697565243782.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35092 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 650px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 650\/366;\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"><em>Corean Reynolds speaking to City Awake attendees at Roundhead Brewing Company.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n<style>\r\n    .cta-btn-wrapper{margin-bottom:2rem;margin-top:-10px;}\r\n<\/style>\r\n<section class=\"wysiwyg_block\">\r\n    <div class=\"container\">\r\n        <div class=\"row\">\r\n            <div class=\"col-lg-8\">\r\n            \r\n            <h5><strong><span class=\"TextRun SCXW99352405 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-US\" xml:lang=\"EN-US\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW99352405 BCX0\">Using the S.W.O.T analysis approach that identified the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats of nightlife, below are a few key takeaways that surfaced from the conversation.<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One focus of the conversation was on ensuring that the youth (under 21, and even the 16-18 group) have spaces to gather for cultural activities and nighttime social events. While arcades are traditional spaces for youth, it is not always financially stable to just have arcade games. The event attendees suggested popup events with mocktails that could allow students to showcase their musical talents, events to showcase school pride (BC vs. BU nights, etc.) that could be incentivized with discount codes for the winners, and even opportunities for students to get involved in the nightlife economy itself via internships.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">There was also a focus on creating spaces that different communities in Boston want to see. One example was the large Dominican community in Boston that would like to see Hookah lounges come to the city so that they don\u2019t have to travel a distance from the city to find one. Unfortunately, due to the Boston Health Commission ruling to ensure that everyone is able to work in a smoke-free environment, this may not be the easiest feat, but thinking of our diverse communities and what they are looking for from their nightlife experience was a focus of the discussion.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Corean shared with attendees some next steps that she is working on with city leaders to mitigate some of Boston nightlife;s current challenges. Julian Cyr<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> who thinks it will help Massachusetts remain competitive. Currently, a bill filed by the Senator would allow cities and towns to opt into offering discounted drink promotions during after-work hours. In Boston, Corean and her team are creating a committee in the bar and nightclub space to create initiatives that aim to find alternative solutions to the happy hour ban. While they should cost $2,800 annually, the demand for them and the limited amount available\u2014which is about 1,400 by state law\u2014has driven the prices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wgbh.org\/news\/local\/2023-08-08\/why-are-liquor-licenses-in-boston-so-expensive-and-rare\">as high as $600,000<\/a> (when buying and transferring one from a current licensee to a new business). Many businesses use these as an asset and investment, so some existing owners with licenses &#8220;don&#8217;t want to see their investment devalued by the introduction of new licenses.&#8221; (WBUR). Recently, there were hearings for 250 more liquor licenses for Boston, which would create a pathway to equity in owning them in neighborhoods with the least number of liquor licenses per capita (Jamaica Plain, Dorchester, Roxbury, Mattapan). This initiative would bring five licenses per zip code for five years, resulting in 250 licenses at the end of the five-year span.
